About

Within the Art department there are 3 large teaching rooms with an ICT suite (for multimedia projects) and a kiln/ceramics room. The department has three members of teaching staff; Mrs L Taylor (Head of Art), Mr R Pemble (ICTAC Coordinator) and Mr A Bishop.

Art & Design is currently taught to every Key Stage 3 student twice a week, on a 6 week rotation with Drama and Music. Students have a total of 36 hours of Art per year. Art & Design has a large take-up at Key Stage 4 Edexcel BTeC First (Diploma, Certificate and Introductory Certificate) qualifications currently in place, which has also proved to be both popular and successful.

Other Information

Art & Design staff support subject specific extra-curricular activities - e.g. Fashion club, exhibitions, visits, community and transition involvement (workshops with parents and local Primaries), additional tuition for students in twilight sessions, known as Success Zone.

Art & Design staff have also supported Music, Drama and Dance activities, with involvement in all aspects of concerts/productions - from posters to set design and construction. Our current project is building the set for this year’s entry for Rock Challenge.

There is a commitment to experimental learning, and Art & Design staff organise a number of visits every year. Recently some students have visited 'The Clothes Show Live Exhibition' at the NEC Arena. The visits usually form the basis of further work by the students and sometimes even the parents too.

Whilst recognising that Art & Design, as a subject, is usually perceived as an individual’s response, the ethos of the department has been to encourage students in both Key Stages to involve themselves in all aspects of 'The Arts'. This has been done through the obvious involvement and support shown to students by their Art teachers.
