About

Within Geography, we aim to provide pupils with a well balanced curriculum which will look at the Geography of our local area, the Geography of Britain and the wider world. It will introduce students to the awe and wonder of the natural environment and help them to understand how humans and the earth interact with each other. In addition the subject provides our pupils with research skills, team work and independent thinking all of which are transferrable to day to day life.

KS3

At Key Stage 3 Geography is studied for 1 60 minute lesson per week.

Across the three years pupils study issues such as flooding, the Amazon Rainforest, coastal processes and extreme weather. All of these are taught using a range of different strategies which include ICT based research and presentations, group work and underpinning all of these a strong focus on the basic skills of literacy and numeracy.

KS4

The Geography GCSE course is an option course for Year 10 and Year 11 and for a number of Year 9 pupils. It is taught in 4 60 minute lessons per week and is completed in one year.

The department currently follows the AQA Syllabus A which has an equal balance of both physical and human Geography. It is assessed by two exam papers (75%) and a single piece of coursework (25%). Over the course of the year pupils study 6 units of work which are:

• Tectonic Activity
• Coasts
• Ecosystems
• Settlement
• Agriculture
• Managing Resources

As well as this there is a unit of work that concentrates on geographical skills such as map reading, data presentation and interpretation.

Enrichment Activities

The Geography department runs a weekly successzone for pupils requiring extra support with coursework or revision. There are also a number of sessions provided on a Saturday morning throughout the year.
