KS3 - Years 7 & 8

In KS3 Science is studied for four 60 minute lessons each week.

The Science faculty has developed its own innovative and exciting thematic style scheme of work for Key Stage 3. Students are introduced to scientific content in topics that are relevant to everyday life, and are provided with opportunities to develop transferrable thinking and learning skills

Example themes:
• Forensics – how is science used in solving crime?
• Hollywood Science – the science of the movies and special effects
• Scientists at Work – exploring what it means to be a scientist, how to judge a scientific claim, and researching and evaluating controversial issues.

KS4 - Years 9, 10 and 11

In science, the majority of students will begin studying for GCSE or equivalent qualifications in Year 9, and continue these studies throughout years 10 and 11.

Science is studied for four 60 minute lessons per week by students in year 9, and five 60 minute lessons each week for students in years 10 and 11.

There are 4 different routes available to students. Click the tabs to the right.

Routes 1 and 2

Route 1: Triple Science

Students who achieve a level 6 or above at KS3 and who demonstrate a real commitment and enthusiasm for science have the opportunity to undertake Triple Award Science. This route results in the award of three GCSE’s in Biology, Physics, and Chemistry, and is particularly useful for those students considering pursuing a career in the scientific or medical industry.

Route 2: Core Science and Additional Science

This traditional scientific route results in the award of two GCSE’s grades A* to G.
Both Core and Additional Science cover aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and are assessed by a combination of examination and coursework submission. In additional to scientific content, these GCSE’s have a huge emphasis on scientific literacy – the knowledge and understanding which students need to understand and recognise the impact of science on everyday life.
Students undertaking this option will have covered sufficient scientific content for progression to studies in any of the A-level sciences.

Route 3

Route 3: Core Science and Additional Applied Science

This vocational GCSE route results in the award of two GCSE’s grades A* to G.

Whilst the Core Science component includes a more traditional scientific content, the Additional Applied GCSE focuses on the use and application of science. Biology, Chemistry and Physics are all embedded in the units, but delivered in an industrial context. Example units include Healthcare, Forensics, and the Chemical Industry.

Students undertaking this option will not have covered sufficient scientific content for progression to studies in any of the A-level sciences, but can undertake further vocational qualifications in science.

Route 4

Route 4: OCR National Level 2 Certificate in Science

This vocational route is entirely coursework assessed. Students are awarded a Pass, Merit, or Distinction on submission of a portfolio of evidence. Modules studied are centred on the application of science in industry, for example Sports Science and Materials Science.

Within this route students have two further options:
1. Studying 6 modules – equivalent to 4 GCSE’s at grade A* to C
2. Studying 3 modules – equivalent to 2 GCSE’s at grade A* to C

Students undertaking this option will not have covered sufficient scientific content for progression to studies in any of the A-level sciences, but can undertake further vocational qualifications in science.

Enrichment Activities

Science Club

Students in years 7 and 8 have the opportunity to attend an after-school science enrichment club where they will be able to undertake scientific projects for entry into local and national competitions, carry out experiments not included in the programme of study, and improve their understanding and appreciation for science.
